    Waterford wins state fencing title in girls' epee

    North Haven — Waterford captured the title in girls' epee on Sunday at the Connecticut High School Fencing Championships.

    The Lancers beat Ledyard 5-1, East Lyme 5-0 and Hand 5-1. The team of Katie Hawkins, Maple Siu, Hazel Siu and Ali DeMarco brought the title home.

    Waterford also finished second in girls' foil, beating Ledyard 5-0 and Hopkins 5-4 before falling to Guilford 5-4 in the final. The Lancers team was Taylor Wininger-Sieve, Danielle Nykyforchyn, Charlotte Morin and Julie Morrison.

    Waterford's Eastern Connecticut Conference rival East Lyme also placed in boys' epee and girl's epee.

    The Vikings boys' team of Jackson Matlock, Alaric Anderson, Michael Monaghan and Dylan Goolcharran finished third and the girls' team of Greta Schwartz, Jenny Guo, Iris Liu and Nicole Zhou placed fourth.

    Teams from Norwich Free Academy and Ledyard were also in the competition, which included the top 32 teams in each weapon.
