Congress abdicates duty whether to wage war

I have a suggestion to run past readers of The Day. Some may think it's radical. Not me. Let's convene a Constitutional Convention and go ahead and repeal Article 1, Section 8, Clause 11 of the U.S. Constitution, which states, "The Congress shall have the power . . . to declare war, grant letters of marque and reprisal and make rules concerning captures of land and water."

Once again, we have a president dropping bombs on another country without any formal authorization from Congress for that action. If that is not seen as an act of war (against Syria, in the most recent case) what is? Wouldn't citizens here consider it an act of war if a foreign country started dropping bombs on the United States?

This Congress (and others before it) has abdicated its constitutional responsibilities and I think it's time to give up the fantasy that in the United States we have three co-equal branches of government. Pious comments from the likes of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Yes, I'm talking to you too, Democrats in Congress and those who are still voting members of the Democratic Party) that the president should come to Congress before bombing another country don't cut it when the bombing has already started.
