Groton should be leaders, not followers, in addressing plastic pollution

I write in response to “Survey shows very strong support for reducing single-use plastics in Groton” (March 3). The article summarizes data compiled by our Conservation Commission whereupon 72 percent of resident respondents overwhelmingly favored reducing single-use plastics, while 63 percent of business respondents were supportive. So how does the Town Council react to the commission’s presentation and survey results? Their response, "Let’s follow, for consistency's sake what our neighboring shoreline community of Stonington is doing."

Really? You have positive data, community support and a commission that appears to have done its homework and, ironically, on the very same page, David Collins’s column, “The two Mystics: Groton outshines Stonington,” describing the careful stewardship, good planning and diligence of another Groton commission.

The longer you wait to act our shoreline and environment becomes more ravaged by plastic. The time is now to pass a Groton ordinance because the people of Groton have spoken, and they favor leaders − not followers.
