Dubious about cost-saving plan for community colleges

Your editorial, “Reorganizing community college system makes sense,” (April 13), on the proposal for one Connecticut community college might have been more helpful to readers if you had included other information. You stated there would be regional presidents over four existing colleges but in the east, there will be one president for Three Rivers, Capital in Hartford, Manchester, Quinebaug Valley and Middlesex. How many things run more efficiently or effectively out of Hartford and how are these communities similar?

Also, when the legislature combined the state universities and community colleges and put them under the control of a new Board of Regents, it was also to save millions. Those savings did not happen so why should we have confidence in the savings projected for this latest plan?

The new expanded system office will have a budget larger than several of the colleges. Of most concern is your contention that an appointed Board of Regents (9 of 15 appointed by the governor) should decide the structure of the largest unit of higher education in Connecticut rather than elected officials who are known to and accountable to the public.

    Dianne Williams

    Montville

President Emerita of Quinebaug Valley and interim president at Mohegan (now Three Rivers) and Middlesex community colleges.
