Can't be all things to all people

The political cartoon on Aug.16 editorial page reminded me of many personal stories regarding public assistance. I do realize and sympathize with people who, for various reasons, such as divorce, ill health, job loss, etc. are down on their luck and need some help; however, the cartoon hits a nerve. In my case, having worked 37 years in public school education, I am not eligible for my husband's Social Security because I was a teacher. I pay my own Medicare and supplemental Medicare bills every three months and month respectively. I want to live independently as long as I can, so I have the usual homeowner bills.

My parents were immigrants who worked in the textile mills, took in boarders and ran a restaurant to become productive American taxpayers. I cannot change how I was brought up; therefore, my attitude reflects agreeing with the message in the cartoon. Charity begins at home. Take care of the people who have paid and continue to pay and not those just coming in for the perks.

We simply cannot afford to be all things to all people. It doesn't work that way.
