Connecticut makes it hard to give up license

At age 87, I decided to do the right thing and give up driving, potentially saving life and limb of others on the road, as well as mine. When the time came for license renewal, I decided the smart thing to do was to obtain a government ID in lieu of a license. When I inquired, I was told I could not obtain this document without presenting myself at a Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicle office. How to get there? Drive, of course. But that’s illegal. In my present physical condition, I must hire a handicap equipped van and driver to go anywhere. I now have an opportunity to ride a bus from my retirement facility to visit the Coast Guard Library Museum. But I now find I will not be admitted there without a government issued Photo ID! My driver’s license and passport are expired.
