Failure to repair bridge places citizens in danger
Failure to Fund the Repair of the Bridge on North Stonington Road
I am a resident of Old Mystic at 4 North Stonington Road in Groton. I am very disappointed in the Town of Stonington's decision not to fund the repair of the bridge. This is a public safety issue as referenced in the letter to the town from Marcel DuFresne.
Fire safety is the most serious of our concerns, with the bridge closure presenting a danger to the homes on North Stonington Road, Groton. Fire Chief Richards can attest that the nearest fire hydrant is roughly 1,200 feet away – nearly a quarter mile from the residences on North Stonington Road.
I am extremely concerned! I am also disturbed to read in The Day, “Updated: Old Mystic bridge closure may be permanent,” (Feb. 26), that the Town of Stonington has budgeted $100,000 for a climate change program but can't adequately address a pressing issue of public safety that could exacerbate the potential for property damage, risk of injury, or even death to local residents.
I expect our elected local officials of both towns to take this seriously, because we certainly do. $100,000 for a climate change program but zero dollars to protect the safety of local residents! Really?
