    Close those beaches

What good is it to shut businesses, schools and outdoor basketball courts? Despite coronavirus warnings, on Saturday afternoon at Ocean Beach, people were mixing in large crowds and kids were frolicking on the boardwalk. Beach edicts were not being followed except by a few.

The Ocean Beach population, including the corona vacation renters, will continue to metastasize with the advent of warmer weather and carry the virus home infecting others. New London Mayor Passero says the city is coordinating its response with Ledge Light Health District. They do not recommend closure at this time, and state, “outdoor activities are relatively safe assuming social distancing measures are adhered to.”

Apparently, authorities don’t want to harm the tourist economy. They don’t care about the epidemiological implications of their actions. Our local officials need to close all beaches for the sound health of our community until further notice and not wait until it’s too late.

New London has limited hospitalization facilities and can’t handle a pandemic crisis. Controlling the virus can only be reduced by effective health intervention.
