Safety, not drive time, is the reason bridge must be repaired

Upon reading the letter submitted by David Atwater, “Rebuilding tiny Groton-Stonington bridge would waste tax dollars,” (March 31), I was forced to think that he has not tried to navigate the corner of the road where the stop sign sits in front of the little corner store, and cars are parked at the stop sign, while going to the Post Office, or to the store to pick up something. This is also while people are parked across the street in the same area, (with a fire hydrant ) with folks parked at an angle, making it impossible to see traffic coming down the hill, and running through the huge stop sign, without even slowing up!

It is a very dangerous corner, and something needs to be done to avoid someone getting killed there. It may seem to Atwater that only a little time is wasted by going a different way with fire apparatus. A new hydrant would not cure this problem, as Atwater suggests, as firefighters would need to get more hoses, etc., and more manpower there to use it.

Maybe Mr. Atwater should try riding with the wonderful volunteer firefighters of the local department a few times to see how dangerous a job it is!
