    Restrict short-term rentals in Noank

In order to preserve the quality of life in Noank, we must restrict and regulate STR’s (less than 30 days), “Short-term rental rules proposed in Noank,” (May 2). Noank is a quiet place to live with a long history of LTR’s and homeownership. Noank is a residential community where everyone knows their neighbors. Homes are close together. Streets are narrow.

Noank is now a tourist attraction with 25-50 STR’s and noise, speeding cars, litter and parties at night. To those who claim they cannot pay their taxes without their STR income, I say rent for a month at a time, but not for a weekend or a week. Our homes and lives are upended by those who are on vacation. Vermont is struggling with STR regulations to preserve and protect neighborhoods. The Hamptons want owner-occupied only. Towns on the Cape implemented a town tax on STR’s to cover the added burdens placed on services. Health and safety regulations, fire codes, inspections, insurance, and liability have risen to the forefront of this unregulated industry. I believe in protecting the residential LTR market, supporting full-time residency, discouraging real estate speculation, and leveling the playing field for STR’s by enforcing regulations that the hotel industry is held to.
