Residents should decide fate of Montville PD

A plan to create an independent Montville Police Department has started again. This began when our town council appropriated $350,000 to change out present police radio system so it can function without state police supervision.

There was also in both the Nov. 11 Montville Times and The Day newspapers press releases from unidentified sources that proclaimed “most candidates agree that the town should remove the state police program and transition into an independent police department.” Why? By whom?

On two prior occasions Montville voters said no to creating a town police department but approved the construction of a top-of-the-line police headquarters facility (that includes 3,300 square feet of unused space). Our police have excellent benefits, new uniforms and weapons, and patrol with SUVs that most of us could not afford.

If our town council believes we should have an independent police department, let we voters decide this matter by voting in a town wide referendum.
