    The Day practices censorship

I am writing about Sten Spinella's page-one story, “Colchester first selectman asks that RuPaul book be removed from public library,” (June 28).

I am struck by the incongruity of The Day's casting “censorship” in a bad light.

The Day itself aggressively practices censorship in its online comment sections, removing comments that appear “offensive” to its in-house moderator cum censor and banning certain subscribers from posting comments.

In 2018, The Day went so far as to revise its commenting rules to stipulate that subscribers comment only under real names, chilling freedom to speak out by introducing the possibility of reprisals.

The real story behind any attempted “censorship” in Colchester is the reaction to it that reached all the way to a front-page story in The Day.

Was anyone at The Day contacted by activists who make a practice of targeting what they perceive as “censorship and homophobia”? Do such activists have long-standing relationships with Day staffers? And crucially: if such activists are part of organized groups, how are these groups funded?

It is time for The Day to engage in some serious self-examination in print about its own relationship with censorship and with local far-left activists.
