    Survival a Top Priority

I am a physician and live near Route 146 in Guilford. This past Thursday (May 31), I was driving east on Route 146 in Branford near School House Road and came upon an accident.

A bicyclist had just been struck by an SUV driven by a young girl. As we waited for emergency services, which arrived very promptly, several people attempted to help hold the cyclist's helmet still in case he had broken his neck. He appeared severely injured and was dressed like a serious biker (biking shoes, gloves, etc.). The young girl who had hit him said, "I didn't see him." I suppose that is always the case.

This is the second bicycle accident I have seen on Route 146 in the last three weeks. My family, friends, and I all ride our bicycles on 146. I often ride to Hammonasset Beach and back on routes 146 and 1. These roads are filled with bicycle riders and cars, most of which are going past the posted speed limit. Bicycle ridership is up and will continue to grow. These roads cannot handle the motor vehicle and bicycle traffic.

The Shoreline Greenway Trail, completely removed from all vehicle roadways, must be a top priority for all of us and our local governments. It's not just a matter of right-of-way-it's a right-to-survive.
