Reduced postal service cuts media diversity
The San Jose Mercury News editorial published by The Day on Feb. 9, "No Saturday mail? It's about time!", cheered the ending of Postal Service Saturday delivery.
Before taking a victory lap: the result of downsizing the post office will include less service for the public, less independent media, a possible sell off of buildings in many cities including New London, and probably fewer jobs.
It is not clear how much money it saves.
Motivated by money from UPS and Fedex, Republicans mandated that the post office fund its pension and health care for the next 75 years over the next 10 years. So, the privatizers get to compete with fairly well-paid jobs with minimum-wage ones. Yet another regressive policy for downward mobility by the GOP.
The Postal Service was written into the Constitution by smart men who realized the importance of diverse media. It was the media at the time.
It seems the smart men have disappeared, Congress has allowed concentrated corporate media to dominate the news, and to spawn advertising that would be considered spam if it were on the Internet.
Media under corporate stewardship is in a sad state. There is not much good information and a silenced citizen voice.
