What has Finizio done? Quite a lot, actually

Joyce Anne Grabel posed several questions regarding Mayor Finizio’s endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders and Finizio’s claim of “…thinking nationally and globally, but acting locally,” “Finizio Sanders’ support short on specifics,” (June 10).

In an effort to combat global warming, Mayor Finizio put into the magnet school pathways bonding ordinance language that ensures the new buildings will be solar, and divested our pension plans from fossil fuels. Finizio raised the minimum wage for municipal employees and contractors to $10.10 per hour, making New London the first city in Connecticut to do so. He made New London a sanctuary city, and instituted a pilot program for police body cameras, and strengthened the department’s community rapport by removing biting dogs based on 88.9 percent of dog bites were against minorities before he was in office.

He refused to sign an education budget that flat funded our schools for a record five years in a row, and instead led the referendum campaign to invest in our schools so that New London youth wouldn't be denied opportunities due to an underfunded school system. The measures taken by Finizio on the local level are directly connected to issues on the national and global level and in line with Sanders’ platform.
