North Stonington school project too expensive

The governor has proposed drastic cuts in government in view of the state’s poor current financial condition. This includes cuts in assistance to hospitals and to items of regional concern such as tourism. He is also pursuing a hugely expensive, multi-year overhaul of the state’s transportation infrastructure.

Against such a backdrop, a belief that the state at some time in the future will guarantee $16,960,000 in reimbursement to the Town of North Stonington for a proposed $38.2 million school modernization project is unrealistic. Coupled with the yet-to-be determined final cost of the town’s Emergency Services Building, which needs millions more in additional funding and another round of bidding, the proposed school modernization project is not an affordable expense for the townspeople to bear at this time. Other, less expensive alternatives to this capital modernization project need to be resurrected and pursued.
