Groton City vote should be reversed

As one who is active in local history and preservation, I was surprised by the outcome of a recent Freeman’s meeting in the City of Groton. On the agenda a routine transfer of previously bonded money from an account that was not being used, into an account where it would be used. The uses include repairs to the Municipal Building, infrastructure support for the Thames River Heritage Park, and restoration of a significant landmark, the Mother Bailey House. This transfer has no impact on taxes, the funds are already there. Not approving this transfer, however, may cost taxpayers to fund necessary repairs to the Municipal Building.

The Avery-Copp House, another historic site on Thames Street, created the platform from which the Thames River Heritage Park came into being. This is possibly the single most important opportunity to drive economic growth in the area. The Town and City of Groton, and the City of New London, have already invested in it.

Opposing the transfer of these funds makes no sense. I sincerely hope there will be another opportunity to reconsider this issue.
