Coast Guard Museum in downtown? No!

This letter is in response to the article, “2017 is crucial year for Coast Guard Museum fundraising” (Jan. 17). The organizers hope to raise at least $13 million in private donations in 2017 toward the estimated $100 million plus project.

Recently, the National Coast Guard Museum Association and its lead architect unveiled preliminary museum designs that envision an overblown four-story Menagerie perched high on the New London waterfront, which will significantly alter the character of the historic downtown, contrary to the Connecticut Coastal Management Act.

The scenic historic coastal views and vistas observed from both sides of the Thames River are considered to be in the public domain. The railroad station and other buildings are listed on the National Historic Register; the architectural style of many surrounding buildings in New London date from Colonial times.

Federal legislation (14 United States Code 98) ambiguously authorizes locating the museum "at, or in close proximity to, the Coast Guard Academy," but does not mandate the location. There is little public support for the museum to be located downtown.

All federal taxpayers will eventually donate to the museum by footing the bill for its upkeep. For now, I suggest you keep your money.
