Beware phone scams that prey on elderly

Warning to every senior citizen: My friend’s mother got a call that said, “Grandma, I’m in trouble in Mexico and you need to send money.” They wanted her to send a large sum of money to a post office box. My friend had her daughter call her Grandma to tell her she was not in Mexico. We laughed over how close the woman was to sending money.

    Well, my turn came.

The first was a male voice saying, “Grandma.” I informed the man that I did not have any grandsons his age and hung up. The second was a female saying, “Grandma.” I made the mistake of talking to her. I told her this was a scam against the most vulnerable group in our society. She said, “You have lots of money.” That’s when I told her that my granddaughter doesn’t speak with a Mexican accent. I then went to the Groton police and talked to an officer about ways to stop them. He told me there is no way to trace these people and you should never send money to an unknown address.

Grandmas and Grandpas be aware these people are trying to suck you in through your grandchildren!
