Sanders was right, big changes needed
Kudos to Bernie Sanders for the realism that led him to quit the presidential campaign. Let’s not forget another aspect of his realism: He was right on crucial issues. COVID-19 is making this crystal clear.
Today, the federal government is rightly offering handouts to everyone in sight, an approach usually denounced by Republicans. This action is necessary because too many workers are paid too little (Bernie!). We are also learning that lower-income individuals are more susceptible to COVID-19 and need better health care (Bernie!).
Someday, we will leave COVID-19 behind us. I hope we will not leave behind the Bernie-Sanders-inspired idea that a modern democratic society takes care of its most-needy people.
