Why legalize another unhealthy smoking product?

This is a puzzle that I am unable to solve.

For decades we have been fighting to get rid of the use of tobacco products for smoking because of the health hazards and various other reasons. Now our legislators have decided to legalize the social use of marijuana.

What makes the use of marijuana any safer than the use of tobacco? I know that marijuana has medical uses, but it has other detrimental effects. I know of a number of people who started using marijuana, then went on to other addictive drugs. Was it the marijuana that caused their addiction? I do not know, but it appears to be very suspicious.

I think that the biggest reason for legalizing it is the big tax dollar.
