Crucial time for East Lyme land

The upcoming municipal elections come at a crucial time for East Lyme. Rapid development and loss of open space has been accelerating in East Lyme and the time has come to address these issues. Open land known to be a priority for the town to preserve is purchased by wily developers, subdivided and then only part is sold to the town for outrageous profit; attempts to limit inappropriate development by the Zoning Commission lead to lawsuits; incorrect information is presented by developers to the Zoning Commission resulting in zoning variances that should never have been granted (each of these recent events are well documented in articles published in The Day).

The East Lyme Democratic Town Committee has adopted a slate of candidates for the upcoming election (full disclosure, I am running for Board of Finance) that, across all the Boards and Commissions, want to work together to ensure the use of land in East Lyme changes for the better. The Democratic candidates, led by Dan Cunningham, the candidate for First Selectman, feel we can turn things around by working together and thinking outside the box.
