    Gavin Lodge reflects my values

The first week of October is “Banned Book Week.” CNN reports there was a 33% increase in book titles that were banned or restricted in libraries around our country this past academic year. We saw the beginning of such activity locally when a letter signed by 135 people was sent to the Noyes Library requesting that certain books sanctioned for teens by the American Library Association be moved so that young people would not have access. Included in this list were books for sex education with graphic illustrations. Approximately 440 people immediately signed a letter opposing such restrictions.

Two candidates running in the November election in Lyme, John Kiker and Gavin Lodge, have expressed strong opposition to book censorship. Both men reflect my values in this important area.

Focusing this letter on Gavin, he is running for Region 18 Board of Education. He has kids in our schools and is a frequent volunteer there. Gavin said: “Region 18 has always stood for educational excellence. We have cultivated thinkers and leaders; and we prepare our kids to go out and conquer an ever-changing and challenging world. Why would we stop their education by impeding their access to books and ideas?”
