    Local college notes

    Camel tracks

    • The Connecticut College women's hockey team helped sponsor a Teddy Bear Drive to benefit the Boston Children's Hospital last weekend while hosting Amherst College. Conn team manager Lowell Abbott worked with Amherst manager Stephanie Clegg to run the event.

Conn junior Molly Murphy also organized a bone marrow drive, honoring the memory of former Yale University player Mandi Schwartz who died of Leukemia. Mandi was a teammate of Molly's sister Caroline at Yale.

The Camels also invited several members of the Southeastern Connecticut Special Olympics Speed Skating team to Saturday's game.

"I'm proud that our student-athletes are committed to assisting others," coach Kristin Steele said. "It is particularly motivating that two competing teams are willing to work together to make these efforts successful."

    • Men's and women's swimming coach Marc Benvenuti saluted seniors Harry Beauregard, Erika Fernandes, Lauren Pappas, Albert Perley, Hillary Scott, Tim Walsh and Carrie Wesnousky on Saturday during Senior Day.

Alex Mavrovic finished in a school record 14 minutes, 45.67 seconds, in the 5,000 meters Saturday at the Terrier Classic at Boston University. Mike LeDuc also ran record-setting time in the 5K, finishing in 14:48.82 and breaking former All-American Adam Fitzgerald's mark (14:53.92) set more than a decade ago.

Dan Smoot joined the school record-setting party, establishing his mark in the 60-meter hurdles (9.71). In the women's competition, Sara Gildersleeve ran a record 26.66 in the 200 meters, topping the mark held by assistant coach Lori Kessel Allegra.

    • The women's basketball team still has a shot to finish in the top four of the New England Small College Athletic Conference standings and host a league tournament game. The Camels are 14-4 overall, 4-3 in the conference. Sophomore Tara Gabelman is first in the conference in rebounding (10.3), double-doubles (10) and second in scoring (15.7).

    • Senior Sean Curran ranks first in the NESCAC in assists with 18 for the men's hockey team. The Camels are 5-10-3, 3-7-2.

    Bear sightings

    • Coast Guard Academy freshman Nate Giorgio, the top-ranked wrestler in New England at 125 pounds, continued on his winning path, earning three wins at the New England Metro Duals Saturday. He improved to 23-4 overall. Senior Colin Schuster has a 14-8 record at 157 pounds.

The Bears have a big trip this weekend, traveling to the Air Force Academy in Colorado to compete in the All-Academy Championships on Super Bowl Sunday.

    • The women's basketball team is in the midst of a tough stretch, playing five of six games on the road. Sophomore Kaitlin Ward and freshman Brittany Zimmerman lead the team in scoring, averaging 12.8 points and 11.5 points, respectively.

    • Junior Greg Marshall (15.2), freshman David Anderson (11.6) and sophomore Kevin Sowers (10.6) are the leading scorers for the men's basketball team. The Bears are still in the hunt for a berth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament. They host WPI at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

    Around the region

    • Bacon Academy graduate Kelly Dixon is gaining valuable experience as a freshman member of the St. Michael's College women's basketball team. While she's seen limited action, appearing in only five games, she's improving.

Teammate Caitlin Quinn, a senior from Montville, says Dixon is making a contribution in practice with her play and upbeat personality.

"She knows her role," Quinn said. "She's going to keep working at it. Even over this season you can see her improvements. And she is so vocal, so happy to be around. She's such an easygoing girl to be with and hang out with.

"She definitely keeps it upbeat in practice. She's loud and vocal and can get us all to laugh when we need a moment to relax."

    • Competing for the Bryant University track team, Brooke Tomasetti, a freshman from Waterford, finished fifth in the 800 meter run at the Greater Boston TC Invitational on Jan. 22 at Harvard University. Her time of 2 minutes, 20.64 seconds missed the school record by less than a second. She made the Dean's List last fall.

    • Junior guard Michael Jensen of Gales Ferry had 11 points in Western Connecticut State University's 93-87 win over Rhode Island College on Jan. 24. A Ledyard graduate, he is averaging 10.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 15 games.

    • New London's Fred Hewett took first in the 200 and 400 and ran the lead leg on the winning 4x200 relay team for Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday at the Coast Guard Invitational. The former Ledyard great is unbeaten in the 200 in three meets this season.

Freshman Whitney Allen of East Lyme competed for the ECSU women, placing fourth in the weight throw and fifth in the shot put.

    • Senior guard Kevin Donahue of Stonington is the leading scorer for the Assumption College men's basketball team. He's averaging 17.4 points and 4.1 rebounds while starting all 19 games.
