Nashua, N.H. - Second-seeded Mitchell College advanced to the championship round of the New England Collegiate Conference baseball tournament Saturday with an 11-2 win over No. 1 Daniel Webster in the winners' bracket final.

The Mariners (23-12-1) can earn their second NCAA Division III tournament berth with a win over host Daniel Webster at 11 a.m. today. Daniel Webster stayed alive by beating Becker College 6-4 in the losers' bracket final.

Should Mitchell lose, a winner-take-all final will follow at 3 p.m.

Freshman Tyler Shamas (9-1) pitched all nine innings for the Mariners, scattering four hits and striking out six. It was his sixth complete game this season, but first in a nine-inning game.

The Mitchell offense, meanwhile, had 12 hits, including three by freshman Neftali Arroyo, who doubled, hit a home run and drove in a career-high five runs.

In addition, Ken Olszewski went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored while Marc Dorsi, Rafael Garcia and freshman Nova Crespo of New London added two hits apiece and Waterford's Gavin LaLima had an RBI single.

In other games:

• Rutgers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to beat UConn 9-4 in a Big East Conference game. L.J. Mazzilli had two hits and drove in two singles and Tom Verdi had two hits for UConn (28-20, 9-11).

Softball

• Top-seeded Springfield College scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking advantage of three errors to rally for a 6-2 win over Coast Guard Academy in the winners' bracket final of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament.

No. 6 Coast Guard (22-16) plays No. 3 Babson in the losers' bracket final at noon today and the winner will have to beat Springfield twice to win the tournament.

The Bears scored their runs on Stacia Sarwinski's solo home run in the fourth that tied the game at 1-1 and on an RBI double by Jessie Richardson in the fifth that gave Coast Guard a 2-1 lead.

"We played championship softball for five innings, but we have to finish," Coast Guard coach Donna Koczajowski said. "We proved that we belong here, we just missed some scoring opportunities and in tournament play, you have to take advantage of those opportunities when you have them."

• UConn split a Big East doubleheader with DePaul, rallying for a 3-2 eight-inning victory in the opener before dropping the second game 5-4. UConn (26-26, 8-13) tied the first game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, including an RBI single by Fitch's Brittany Duclos.

Men's lacrosse

• Connecticut College never led in its New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament semifinal, losing to third-seeded Tufts 14-11 at Middlebury (Vt.) College.

The Camels, the No. 2 seed, trailed 5-1 at halftime and fought back to tie the game at 5-all on John Lyons' goal in the third quarter before falling behind for good.

Lyons finished with four goals and two assists and Tyler Corcoran had a goal and two assists while Chad Sawyer and Kevin Dachille added a goal and an assist for the Camels (12-4), who won the regular season meeting 15-14.

Men's track & field

• Conn College's Michael LeDuc successfully defended his title at the New England Division III Championships at Colby College, wining the 5,000-meter race in 14:30.03. Also earning All-New England honors was the 4x800 relay team of Matt Boudreau, Andrew Duarte, Old Lyme's Ian Rathkey and Tristian Cole, which finished sixth in 7:53.28.

Women's track & field

• Conn College's Sam Pevear earned All-New England honors in the discus at the New England Division III meet. Pevear placed eighth with a throw of 123 feet, 10 inches.

Women's crew

• Conn College's varsity four placed second to Bowdoin in the grand final of the New England Championship on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The team of coxswain Maureen Sweeney, Anne Speranza, Natalie Calhoun, Seana Siekman and Lindsey Cook finished in 7:52.13, nearly 15 seconds behind Bowdoin. The second varsity four placed second behind Bowdoin in the grand final in 7:58.0 and the novice four was third in the grand final in 8:10.

Men's crew

• Conn College won the men's varsity four petit final at the New England Championship as coxswain Phoebe Rohn, Rob Jubinville, Mike Clougher, Caleb Duvoisin and Matt Murdock finished in 7:20.5, beating Clark by less than a second.

College basketball

• UConn will host Florida in a non-conference game on Dec. 2, according to the Palm Beach Post. The site has yet to be determined. The Huskies will play a return game in the two-game series either in the 2014-15 or 2015-16 season.
