    UConn captures its NCAA opener

Blacksburg, Va. - First baseman Bobby Melley had four hits and an RBI to lift UConn to a 5-2 victory over Virginia Tech in an NCAA Division I baseball tournament regional game on Friday.

The Huskies (35-26) had 16 hits - all singles. UConn scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead, and starting pitcher Carson Cross and the UConn bullpen made it stand.

UConn will play Oklahoma today. The Sooners beat Coastal Carolina 7-3.

Cross (9-4) went 6 1-3 innings, giving up six hits and one run. He walked three and struck out three.

Leading 1-0, the Huskies got an RBI single by LJ Mazzilli and then scored two runs with two outs in the fifth. Melley's single to right scored Billy Ferriter, and Mazzilli scored on a throwing error by Virginia Tech catcher Chad Morgan.

    • Matt Oberste's two-run single in the fifth inning gave Oklahoma the lead for good, helping the Sooners rally for a victory over Coastal Carolina.

Oklahoma (41-19), the No. 2 seed, trailed 3-0 after the Chanticleers got two runs in the first and one in the second off pitcher Jonathan Gray.

But Gray, considered a top draft prospect, kept Coastal Carolina off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Gray (10-2) pitched a complete game, giving up three runs - two earned - and nine hits. He struck out 11 and walked one.

Max White went 4-for-5 with two RBIs to pace the Sooners, while Oberste went 2-for-5.

The Chanticleers (37-22) got two hits and an RBI from Colin Hering.
