COCHRAN LAWYER PUSHES FOR SPECIAL BOARD MEETING

New London - Thomas Riley, the attorney for former New London High School head football coach Jack Cochran, called on the Board of Education to hold a special meeting to rescind a self-report the school made to the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference regarding alleged illegal baseball practices.

The CIAC Board of Control ruled in May that it would not grant Cochran a hearing on the illegal practices because the high school self-reported it, though chairman George Synott said the board might review its decision should New London High School change its mind about the rule violations.

The Board of Education Personnel and Legal Committee, in its decision upholding Cochran's removal as football coach, ruled that "the evidence adduced at the hearing regarding the investigation thereof was inadequate to support a self-report to the CIAC."

But in a letter to Riley, Synott said that the Board of Control will not review its decision unless, "Superintendent Christopher Clouet or high school principal Daniel Sullivan report to the CIAC that upon further reflection or further investigation, he seeks to withdraw his self report."

Both Clouet and Sullivan left the district on June 30.

School board president Elaine Maynard Adams acknowledged she received the request from Riley Thursday, but will not be making any decisions until after the Independence Day holiday.
