Griswold receives $200,000 grant for Triangle cleanup

Griswold The town has received $200,000 from the federal Environmental Protection Agency to help cover the costs associated with cleaning up the municipally owned portion of the former Triangle Plastic Wire and Cable plant on Route 201.

The town obtained the 4-acre section of the former plant when it purchased the property at a foreclosure auction in February 2009 as a means to recover some of the back taxes owed on the site. The larger portion of the property - 13 acres on Ashland Pond - is owned by New York-based Working Realty Ltd.

First Selectman Philip Anthony Jr. said Monday that the town will use the money to clean up the town-owned property and is currently looking for other grants that could be used to demolish the existing mill structures.
