State: Work on Route 1 bridges begins Aug. 12

Stonington — The state Department of Transportation  announced today that work to replace two Route 1 bridges over Stony Brook and Quanaduck Cove will begin Aug. 12.

The bridges are located just west of the North Main Street intersection.

The $3.1 million project will be done by Hemlock Construction Company, Inc. of Torrington. Work is schedule to be done by May 23, 2013.

The contract calls for maintaining one lane of traffic in each direction on Route 1 between Memorial Day and Labor Day.  Alternating one-way traffic is expected from the day after Labor Day until the Thursday before Memorial Day. Stop signs and concrete barriers will guide drivers through the work zones.

The DOT is urging drivers to obey the posted speed limit in the area and proceed with caution through the work zone.
