Real Gidget to appear at documentary premiere at Mystic Seaport

Mystic - Wait'll you see the real Gidget.

The woman who inspired the book, the movies and the TV show will appear at the local premiere of the documentary, "Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget Story," Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. at Mystic Seaport.

As a teen in the '50s, Kathy Kohner Zuckerman spent several summers in Malibu, Calif., with a group of young surfers who nicknamed her "Gidget," meaning "girl midget." Her experiences led her screenwriter father, Frederick Kohner, to write the novel "Gidget."

After the screening, Zuckerman and director Brian Gillogly will answer questions. The book will be available for purchase. Tickets are $18 at mysticseaport.org/gidget.
