    Preston approves budget

Preston — Voters overwhelmingly approved the school and general government budgets Tuesday in a referendum that featured light turnout on a rainy night for a budget that represented no tax increase.

Voters approved the $10.4 million school budget 124 to 46, and the $3.4 million general-government budget, 137 to 32.

Voter turnout was 5 percent of the town’s 3,266 eligible voters.

Last month, the Board of Finance voted to take $297,000 from the town surplus to offset any tax increase in the coming year, keeping the tax rate at the current 19.43 mills.

“The Board of Finance and the Board of Education worked hard to try and keep any financial impact on the town to a minimum,” First Selectman Robert Congdon said after the vote totals were read. “This vote reflects that.”
