    Stonington hires interim superintendent

Stonington — The Board of Education on Thursday agreed to once again hire Paul Smotas to be the school system’s interim superintendent of schools when Leanne Masterjoseph resigns on June 30.

The board authorized board Chairwoman Gail MacDonald to enter negotiations with Smotas.

This is the second interim superintendent stint in Stonington for Smotas, the former East Lyme superintendent. In 2009, he oversaw the school system for five months after Michael McKee retired and before Masterjoseph was hired.

He earned $543 a day during that time but received no benefits.
