    Cooling center opens in New London, heat and air quality advisories issued for region

    New London — A cooling center will be open today until 8 p.m. at the senior center located at the Richard R. Martin Center at 120 Broad St.

    Reid Burdick, emergency management director, said the center is open to all who want to stay cool today.

    Temperatures for a second day in a row will reach the mid to upper 90s.

    The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory today until 7 p.m., meaning that with the heat and humidity it will feel more like 100 to 104 degrees.

    The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has also issued an air quality advisory starting at 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.

    DEEP said that ground level ozone in the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards.
