Narragansett tribe to mark 9th anniversary of Charlestown raid

Charlestown, R.I. (AP) — The Narragansett Indian tribe is holding a remembrance ceremony on the ninth anniversary of a violent confrontation with state police during a raid on a tribal smoke shop.

The tribe says Saturday's ceremony is intended to ensure that the violence is not forgotten.

The impoverished tribe opened the shop on its land in Charlestown in 2003 after proposal to build a casino failed. It sold cigarettes without collecting state taxes, and state police raided it. The raid spiraled into a brawl, and several tribe members were injured and arrested.

A federal appeals court later ruled the shop was operating illegally.

The ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday in Charlestown, at the former site of the shop, and is open to the public.
