The Chester/Hadlyme Ferry has not been running today because of mechanical problems, the state Department of Transportation said, but service may be restored by this afternoon.

The ferry was out of service on Friday for routine maintenance. Today, the ferry resumed operations briefly, but had to be shut down because a problem with the motor on the hoist that lowers the ramp for the ferry, Diane Darcy, first mate on the vessel, said.

Crews are working on the problem and hope to have service restored later today, she added.

The issue was first reported at 11 a.m.
