Republican Town Committee presses city to update online budget numbers

New London — The Republican Town Committee is calling for the city to update its website with the latest budget numbers so residents will be informed when they vote Sept. 18 at referendum on the $42 million general-government budget.

The 2012-13 budget document on the city’s website does not explain all the modifications made during the budget process, the RTC said, and the city has not updated it to reflect approved settlements, transfers and personnel changes.

Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio’s office responded by saying that finance and IT departments are “working very hard on every issue but is behind in posting the updated information because of staffing cuts.”

A statement released Tuesday afternoon by Finizio’s office reads, in part: “The administration has provided more information to the public throughout this budget process and has been more transparent than any time in New London’s history.”

The updated budget will be online well before the Sept. 18 referendum, the statement said.

Finizio also will hold 13 budget forums throughout the city. The first one will be at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at the public library.
