    NL apartment fire displaces family

New London — A kitchen fire at an apartment at 93 State Pier Road forced a temporary evacuation of the building tonight and was expected to lead to the relocation of one family.

No one was injured in the 6 p.m. fire.

The fire was out by the time members of the New London Fire Department reached the apartment complex’s “C” building.

Battalion Chief Marc A. Melanson said he had put in a call to the Red Cross seeking emergency shelter for a family in apartment 17 on the third floor of the building. Melanson said he didn’t know how many family members were involved, but said there were at least four.

“It really wasn’t a working fire,” he said.

Trucks stationed at the apartment complex had been prepared to battle a fire, but they were not needed, he added.

Firefighters found most of the apartment’s tenants had already evacuated the building by the time they arrived, but Melanson said a few stragglers on the third floor had to be ordered to leave.

Melanson said officials will be brought in to determine whether any structural damage resulted from the fire, but he expected other tenants at the complex run by the New London Housing Authority to be able to stay in their apartments overnight.
