Dalai Lama to deliver free lecture in Providence

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama delivers a lecture at Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi, India, Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012. The Dalai Lama was invited by the university to give a talk on the Importance of Non Violence and Ethical Values.

Providence, R.I. (AP) — Brown University is bringing the Dalai Lama to Rhode Island to deliver a lecture on international affairs.

The university says the exiled Tibetan leader will deliver the Stephen A. Ogden Jr. Memorial Lecture next month at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence. His talk is titled "A Global Challenge: Creating a Culture of Peace."

Brown President Christina Paxson says the university is honored that he will share what he calls his "inspirational message of peace."

The Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his nonviolent struggle in protest of Chinese rule of Tibet.

The speech is free and open to Brown students and faculty as well as the public, but tickets are required.
