    Groton: Regional shelter opens at senior center

    Because of the cold weather expected tonight, the Red Cross will open a regional emergency shelter at the Groton Senior Center at 102 Newtown Road in Groton.

    The Senior Center remains open until 9 p.m. as a respite center with showers, electronic charging and Wi-Fi. The Groton Library, also open until 9 p.m. Thursday, has computer and wireless internet access and activities for children.

    Stonington residents in need of transportation to the Senior Center can board a bus which leaves at 5 p.m. from Stonington High School. Stonington residents can arrange transportation by calling 860- 599-7583, or 860-599-7584.

    Sue Rochester Bolen, senior director of emergency services for the Red Cross, said the Red Cross continues to seek volunteers for help with the aftermath of the storm. Anyone interested can call 860-447-3249.
