Hartford — A Waterford veteran was one of 12 distinguished veterans inducted into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

PFC-Tec 5 Herbert Thomas Schacht was recognized by State Senator Andrea Stillman (D-Waterford) during the afternoon ceremony at the Legislative Office Building. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy addressed the inductees and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman and state Department of Veteran Affairs Commissioner Linda Schwartz officiated the event.

“Herbert Schacht has been an exemplary member of our community, spending his career at the Waterford Country School, where he helped emotionally disturbed children and those with multiple disabilities,” Stillman said in a press release.

“Beyond that, he volunteered as a SCORE counselor, helping with an AIDS mitigation project in Africa and a child placement and adoption service in Guatemala.”

Schacht served in the Army as a medical and surgical technician until his discharge in 1946, Stillman said, stating that his induction into the Veterans Hall of Fame is “an undeniably suitable honor.”

According to the Select Committee on Veterans Affairs, the United States currently has about 2.8 million members and reservists in the Armed Forces.
