Public invited to vigil in Groton tonight

Groton - The Town Council and Board of Education are inviting the community to participate in a vigil tonight to remember those who lost their lives in the Newtown school shooting.

The vigil will be held at 7 p.m. at the Fitch High School football field at 101 Groton Long Point Road. Participants are asked to bring a candle, electric candle or flashlight to show support for those affected by the tragedy.

In the event of inclement weather the event will be held inside the high school auditorium.

The Groton school district has announced that faculty on Monday morning planned to meet to discuss what steps will be taken to handle students or adults expressing difficulty over the shooting.

Support teams at each school are expected to be available throughout the day to respond to individuals who need assistance, according to the Groton schools website.

The school website has also posted a link to a list of tips for parents and teachers, prepared by National Association of School Psychologists, on how to hold a conversation with a child following a traumatic event.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
