    Deck fire damages Norwich restaurant

Norwich —An afternoon fire on the rear outside stairwell at Fat Cats Grill & Bar forced the restaurant to close for the night.

Firefighters, who arrived at the 365 W. Main St. eatery just past 4 p.m., stopped the fire before it extended to the building, said Battalion Chief Greg Despathy. The interior of the restaurant sustained some smoke and water damage. The water damage occurred when a sprinkler activated, Despathy said.

The restaurant was evacuated and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire marshal's office. The damaged stairwell, because it serves as a fire exit, will need to be rebuilt before the restaurant can reopen.

Debra Nousiopoulos, co-owner of the restaurant, said they were able to reopen the following day.
