Norwich — A converted American Ambulance is taking the message of the city’s historic attractions on the road as a traveling tourism kiosk.

Outfitted with wireless access, iPhone compatibility and directions to the city’s tourist attractions, the kiosk will be driven to state fairs in towns throughout northeastern Connecticut.

Ben Lathrop, president and executive director of The Greater Norwich Area Chamber of Commerce, announced the initiative Friday afternoon before city officials, chamber members and residents who helped make the conversion possible.

He said the traveling kiosk will “revolutionize tourism.”

“Yes, Norwich, we’re bringing tourism back,” he said. “We’re going to bring people in by going to them.”

The traveling kiosk will offer directions to Dodd Stadium, Uncas Leap, Mohegan Sun casino, Norwich City Hall, the municipal Rose Garden and other sites.

Mayor Peter Nystrom said that Norwich, with 56 historic sites, is the most historic city in the state.

“We want people who haven’t been to Norwich in a long time to come re-acquaint themselves with our great city,” Nystrom said.

The traveling kiosk won’t be ready until April or May, Lathrop said.

While Lathrop said he isn’t sure where the kiosk’s first stop will be, the city is in the process of applying for a space at the Big E.
