    Students recycle grocery bags, raise money

    Norwich – Students in the city's seven public schools raised $230.25 this week by collecting and recycling plastic grocery bags, obtaining penny sponsorships per bag with matching amounts pledged by the Norwich Shop Rite store.

    Students collected 3,668 plastic bags, and turned in the bags to Shop Rite Thursday. The store agreed to recycle the bags. The Capano family, owners of both Shop Rite and the Harp & Dragon Irish Pub, provided gift cards for the store and the restaurant to the top fundraisers.

    The money raised will benefit Norwich public schools and the Norwich Education Foundation.

    Carman Rojas, a student at Uncas School raised the most money and collected the most Shop Rite bags, 331.

    Daniel Weeks, a student at the John B. Stanton School collected 857 bags in total.
