NL firefighters extinguish stubborn brush fire

New London – A fire “deep in the woods” near power lines off Hawthorne Drive burned for about two hours this evening before firefighters brought it under control.

The fire burned downed trees and brush in an area about the size of two football fields, Battalion Chief Tom Curcio said. Tanker trucks were used to bring water to the scene, and a brush truck from Waterford assisted in putting out the fire, he said.

While the cause of the fire was unclear, there was evidence of a homeless camp in the area, with tents and a campfire. No one was found in the area, however, Curcio said.

City firefighters also fought a couple of smaller brush fires on Sunday off Bayonet Street, Curcio said.

Last week the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection issued a warning reminding residents that the danger of forest fires is high during spring.
