Deceased Suspect, Trooper IDed in Westbrook Shooting

Route 153 in Westbrook was closed for hours on April 8 following a car chase that ended with a collision and shootout between two armed robbery suspects and State Police troopers.

State Police officials have released the names of the state troopers and deceased robbery suspect involved in the April 8 shootout on Route 153 in Westbrook. Jonathan Alvarado, 24, of Deep River died of gunshot wounds following an alleged armed robbery attempt with another, as-yet unidentified suspect and the pursuant vehicle chase. State Police Detective Scott Wisner suffered gunshot wounds in the apprehension and is recovering; Sgt Keith Graham was uninjured in the incident.

On April 8, shortly before 3 p.m., the Old Saybrook Police Department responded to an armed robbery incident at the Days Inn on Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook. Information obtained identified two armed male suspects. Old Saybrook police officers identified a suspect vehicle leaving the area which then engaged them in a motor vehicle pursuit. State Police troopers responded to the area to assist in this incident. The pursued vehicle fled onto Route 153 (Essex Road) into Westbrook, where the suspect vehicle became involved in a motor vehicle collision with a state trooper's vehicle.

Following this collision, gunfire was exchanged between two male suspects and Det. Wisner. In attempts to apprehend the suspects, Wisner was shot. He was transported from the scene by a fellow trooper to the nearby Shoreline Medical Center. He suffered severe, non-life threatening injuries.

Alvarado was transported to the same medical facility where he was later pronounced deceased. A second male suspect was transported by Lifestar helicopter to Hartford Hospital for treatment of severe injuries.

Led by the Office of the State's Attorney and assisted by the Old Saybrook Police, the Connecticut State Police Eastern District Major Crime Unit is investigating these incidents in both Old Saybrook and Westbrook.

The roadway was closed in the area of Route 153, south of Docs Hill, in Westbrook for an extended period of time to allow the State Police Eastern District Major Crime Squad detectives the ability to process and document the crime scene for physical and forensic evidence.

State Police Detective Scott Wisner is a 21 year veteran of the department. Sgt Keith Graham is a 14 year veteran of the State Police. He has assigned to administrative duties pending the completion of this investigation.

The injured suspect is still under 24 hour state police guard at Hartford Hospital as this investigation continues.
