Waterford school board votes to cut one teacher, three subs

Waterford — The Board of Education on Thursday voted unanimously not to renew the contracts of one full-time middle school teacher and three long-term substitutes, citing budgetary, not performance-related, reasons.

Members met briefly in executive session before the regular board meeting to discuss the non-renewals, which the school district must issue prior to May 1 in accordance with Connecticut state statutes.

Courtney Hesch, a social studies teacher at Clark Lane Middle School, and long-term substitutes Dorothy Raviele, Samantha McCarthy and Kathleen Ward, are aware of their non-renewal status, Superintendent Jerome Belair said.

"This has no connection to performance, and this is attributed to the lack of an available position related to a staff reduction under consideration in the school district's budget for the 2013-14 school year," he said.

Also during the board's meeting Thursday, members unanimously approved June 25 as the graduation date.
