New London puts 75 teachers on notice

New London — The Board of Education on Thursday placed 75 nontenured teachers, including one of the high school assistant principals, on nonrenewal notice Thursday due to budgetary constraints.

According to state statute, the school board must notify nontenured teachers of their nonrenewal status by the end of April. The notice does not automatically mean those teachers will lose their jobs next year.

“If indeed the budget will allow it, most of the teachers will be hired back,” board Chairwoman Margaret Curtin said.

Those placed on nonrenewal notice include 22 teachers at the district’s three elementary schools, 22 middle school teachers, 26 teachers from New London High School, four from the Science & Technology Magnet High School, and one teacher who splits time between the middle and high schools.
