Norwich city historian to lead downtown walking tours

Norwich - City Historian Dale Plummer will lead a downtown walking tour on four Sundays starting this weekend at noon.

The tours also will be held May 26, June 9 and June 23, all starting at noon at the plaza outside City Hall. The tours are free and open to the public.

“The tours are intended to showcase what we have in the downtown,” Plummer said, “a very rich and vibrant heritage that spans three centuries of time. In some ways, walking the downtown is about the closest to a time machine you could ask for.”

The tours will include a stop at the Wauregan Hotel, where Abraham Lincoln stayed the night of March 9, 1860.

“This will give people an opportunity to see the magnificent ballroom which was brought back from ruin,” Plummer said.

Evan Burdick, a local architect of note, designed not only the City Hall, but also the Wauregan Hotel, and the United Congregational Church, three major buildings within a block of one another.
