UPDATED: SUV-camper rollover and fire in Groton

Groton - A sports utility vehicle pulling a camping trailer rolled over and caught fire in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 north this afternoon, injuring one person and delaying holiday traffic for several hours. The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. near Exit 87.

Capt. Tim Driscoll of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department said the Ford Explorer and trailer were both on their sides and the Explorer was in flames when the fire company arrived.

All occupants were out of the vehicle when firefighters arrived, Driscoll said, and one of them was transported to the hospital.

Two 20 lb. propane tanks attached to the trailer posed a risk, Driscoll said. Firefighters used one hose line to cool them off while running a second line to extinguish the vehicle fire. The fire company used about 600 gallons of water, some of it provided by the Groton City Fire Department, Driscoll said.

The highway was closed entirely for about a half an hour, according to Driscoll. One lane was reopened, and traffic remained sluggish throughout the afternoon.

The fire company remained on the scene until a wrecker arrived to tow away the damaged vehicles. The highway was fully reopened by 4 p.m. State police are investigating.
